Market Sprouts Kids Club Mission

The Market Sprouts Kids Club mission is to inspire children to take part in our local Rogue Valley food system, enjoy eating nutritious foods, and to empower them to make healthy choices. We hope to provide an opportunity for kids to engage with local farmers and get to know where their food comes from in order to improve health outcomes and inspire a new generation of informed and healthy eaters.

Growing Healthy Kids

The Market Sprouts Kids Club (MSKC) is free educational programming and activities for children ages 5-12 delivered at farmers markets throughout the state of Oregon. The inspiration for MSKC came from Jackie Hammond-Williams, who started the nationally recognized Power of Produce (POP) Club at the Oregon City Farmers Market in 2011. MSKC began in 2012 at five farmers markets across Washington County, and now will be continuing at the Medford Saturday Market thanks to the generous sharing of resources from the Forest Grove Farmers Market. Through the development of kid-friendly curriculum and the dedication of resources and space to MSKC, farmers market staff and volunteers strive to:

  • Create a fun, festive, welcoming environment for children’s participation at the market.
  • Increase opportunities for and depth of interactions between children and farmers and vendors.
  • Enable kids to learn about and participate in their local food system.
  • Empower kids to make healthy food choices.

Program Outline:

  • Each participant will join the club by writing their name and age on the MSKC passport. This passport will be kept on file the market.
  • Upon joining, the participant will receive a custom MSKC reusable bag, RVGCM stick and a $1.00 market token.
  • Each week the participant will receive a stamp on their passport along with a $1.00 market token and the opportunity to participate in MSKC activities.
  • There will be additional prizes for those who receive 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 stamps on their passports.
  • Every Other week, we will host a special activity (9:30a - 1:00p) that participants must complete to earn their token.

Volunteers and Sponsorship

This program will rely heavily on market volunteers and community partnerships in order for its success. We aim to have at least two people working the Market Sprouts booth each time the activities booth is present. Between handling the passports, doing the activity with kids, and simultaneously explaining and recruiting new participants it can be overwhelming if only one volunteer is present.
